How to get a bat to fly out the door (once it is inside your house)

I am one of those people who love bats, so I say this honestly: If they get inside your house (as we have had happen a few times when they flew in through the cat’s window), they want to escape as much as you want them out. Please give them a break and don’t use a tennis racket. Here’s what worked for us: Prop open the door, turn the outside light on, then turn all of the inside lights off. And duck – it is a little disconcerting to have a bat caught in your hair. You’ll thank them later for eating all those mosquitoes around your yard.
