sofa frame with base upholstery layers of jute webbing and burlap

Jute webbing and burlap form the base layers before upholstery is applied to the sofa

Before upholstery padding is applied on this custom organic sofa, natural jute webbing is stapled over the back & arm framing. Then a burlap covering is added over all of the sofa’s inside surfaces to keep padding material in place.

The next layer is a thick organic wool felt (sourced from a local wool operation), placed over the back, arms and seat. The seat decking is the first finish layer, and extends over the lip of the seat front, forming a raised surface which will prevent the cushions from sliding forward on the finished sofa.

second upholstery layer is organic cotton batting

Several layers of organic cotton batting are placed on arms as the first layer of upholstery padding

Several layers of organic cotton are then applied to the inside arms, and covered with a layer of wool batting which acts as a flame retardant.

Step 3 includes covering these thick layers with the finish fabric for a very different look than what you see here.

See bare frame in Step 1.
